  • Reports in Scotland have claimed MLS side Toronto FC will not trigger Jose Cifuentes’ purchase option.
  • Coach Robin Fraser says discussions are still ongoing, with no final decision made.
  • Midfielder’s future remains open ahead of loan expiry and potential Rangers return.

Jose Cifuentes’ future remains unresolved despite reports in Scotland suggesting Toronto will not activate their purchase option, with the situation now appearing more fluid than first indicated.

The Daily Record reported that the MLS side had decided against making his loan move permanent, a development which would normally clear the path for the midfielder to return to Rangers when his deal expires on June 30.

Toronto coach leaves Jose Cifuentes door open

However, Toronto head coach Robin Fraser has cast doubt on any definitive conclusion.

The 59-year-old former USA international stressing that discussions between all parties are still ongoing.

Speaking after a training session to TFC Republic, Fraser made clear that the situation is still active rather than settled.

“There are discussions between us and the parent club, us and the player, and all these things will certainly resolve themselves in enough time,” he said.

“We have Cifu till [the end of] June, so [we’re] just going through the necessary steps now to try to move things forward and see where it goes.”

Pressed further on whether a final decision had been reached regarding the midfielder’s future, Fraser added:

“Not to my knowledge.”

Those comments suggest that while Toronto may be leaning towards not exercising their option.

However, no formal outcome has yet been finalised between the clubs or the player.

Jose Cifuentes latest injury news

Cifuentes’ loan spell has been disrupted by inconsistency and injury issues since leaving Rangers.

Although there have been signs of improvement this season with one goal and three assists in 10 MLS appearances after a difficult start.

His recent absence due to a knee problem has also complicated the picture.

With Fraser confirming he is currently in a rehabilitation phase rather than full training.

“He’s coming along,” Fraser revealed.

“He’s getting therapy, he’s getting treatment, he’s working in the gym. You really have to take time off training.”

Adding further intrigue, Cifuentes has removed reference to Toronto from his social media profile, though the significance of that change remains unclear.

With his loan expiring at the end of June, Rangers are expected to monitor developments closely.

The player is surplus to requirements at Ibrox and will be moved on this summer either to Toronto or elsewhere.

But for now the picture is far from settled, with negotiations still active rather than concluded.
