  • Wolfsburg were relegated to the 2.Bundesliga after defeat to Paderborn on Monday night
  • That massive setback should kill off any remaining speculation linking Danny Rohl to the club
  • It will also have a bearing on the future of Andreas Skov Olsen, who has now returned to his parent club

Wolfsburg have been relegated to the second tier in Germany after they were beaten by Paderborn in the Bundesliga playoff on Monday night.

With the score deadlocked at 0-0 from the first leg, Paderborn got the job done in extra time, having played with a one-man advantage for most of the game.

Joakim Maehle received his second yellow card within just 14 minutes.

The defeat is a hammer blow for Wolfsburg, which will almost certainly kill off speculation of Danny Rohl being lured to the Lower Saxony club.

Wolfsburg relegation should kill off Danny Rohl speculation

Danny Rohl returned to Germany last week and was an interested observer at the Saxony Cup final between FSV Zwickau and Erzgebirge Aue on Saturday.

A permanent move back home is not expected in the near future, and especially not to the 2.Bundesliga.

Rohl was asked in recent weeks about links to Wolfsburg and Bayer Leverkusen, but he shrugged off the suggestion, dismissing it as pure speculation.

As we now know, the German has received the full backing of Andrew Cavenagh and the club to lead Rangers into the new season.

Rohl will need to utilise the current break to recharge with the extent of the work ahead in the coming weeks.

Lawrence Shankland will be the first reinforcement in Rohl’s Rangers rebuild this summer, with the Scotland striker expected to complete his move to Ibrox on Tuesday.

Could Rangers be tempted to go back for Andreas Skov Olsen?

The new situation is also likely to have an impact on Andreas Skov Olsen.

As a high earner, the Dane and other such players could be fast-tracked for a move away from the Volkswagen Arena.

Rangers will not be taking up the original purchase option for Skov Olsen, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if the German club came back to interested parties with a counter offer.

Even at a much reduced price, Andreas Skov Olsen is not an attractive proposition for Rangers.

He was a genuine disappointment in recent months and there is nothing to suggest that he has what it takes and most importantly, what Rangers require, for the next rebuild.

A season in the German second tier could be beneficial for the player, especially after his omission from Denmark’s World Cup squad.

He needs to get his career back on track.
