FC Twente’s Europa League qualification was confirmed on a dramatic final day in the Eredivisie, with former Rangers defender Robin Propper reflecting on a season shaped by fine margins, shifting expectations and a return to European football despite a heavy 5-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven.

Twente were well beaten in Eindhoven on the final day. But still secured fourth place after Ajax were held to a 0-0 draw away to SC Heerenveen.

That combination of results ensured European qualification in a campaign that had swung between optimism and frustration.

Robin Propper reflects on Europa League qualification

For Propper, the finale summed up the unpredictable nature of the season.

“It was bizarre,” he said.  “In the end, PSV is just not for nothing. They are at the top and they have a lot of quality. We had a hard time in the second half.

“Then you have to look at others. Fortunately, that was part of it. Then it’s just beautiful that you get fourth place.

“Especially if you see where we’re coming from. So, it’s not that bad that you don’t get third place?

“Partly yes, but on the other hand, you do get fourth. You get where you were in the first half.”

Robin Propper reflects on Ibrox year

The Dutch defender’s return to Twente came after a brief spell at Ibrox under Phillipe Clement and latterly Barry Ferguson.

Ferguson’s replacement, Russell Martin, chose to move on the 32-year-old defender last summer. With Propper returning to his former club after only a year in Scotland.

“We accepted a bid from them,” Martin said.

“I think it’s just a case of Robin deciding if that’s what he wants and agreeing personal terms.

“I’ve been really impressed with him as a guy, but I think obviously we signed some centre-halves, so it’s going to be difficult for him to play football.

“I think if it happens, it’s a good move for him, and if it doesn’t, it will be because he’s decided it’s not what’s right for him and maybe he’ll look for something else.”

Defender denies he was Ibrox flop

Propper, for his part, has consistently pushed back on the idea that his time in Glasgow was a failure, instead framing it as a short but significant experience at a major club.

“I completely disagree that I somehow failed at Rangers,” he said.

“It was an adventure I wanted to embark on, at a wonderful club with an incredibly rich history.

“I got to play and score in an Old Firm match for example. That was fantastic.”

He also highlighted the intensity of life at Ibrox and the scale of the fixture calendar.

“The lead-up to the matches where the city of Glasgow is 50 per cent Rangers and 50 per cent Celtic was amazing,” he added.

“Well, I got to play in five of those games. I had a wonderful time both at Rangers and I played a lot – 43 matches, so it’s not like I didn’t play.”

Twente’s European qualification, secured despite the heavy final-day defeat and Ajax’s draw, closes a season defined by near-misses and fine margins. It also underlines the contrasting paths of players who briefly shared a dressing room in Glasgow before moving in different directions.

Rangers loanee Danilo and NEC secured third spot and pipped Twente to Champions’ League qualification due to PSV’s final day victory.

Danny Rohl’s Gers will also enter the Europa League this summer, and Propper could face off against his old club should draws align.

His lack of impact at Ibrox after arriving from Twente in 2024 after being their captain, that leadership and captaincy experience alone does not equal a successful dressing room.

The Gers are targeting leaders this summer, with Hearts’ skipper Lawrence Shankland secured and former Sunderland captain Dan Neil linked.

The player needs to be the right fit. Not just one with armband experience.
